Sample BE8254 important questions Basic Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering:

Define magnetic reluctance
The opposition offered by the magnetic circuit for the magnetic flux path is known as magnetic reluctance. It is analogous to electric resistance.

Mention some magnetic materials
Alnicos, chromium steels, copper–nickel alloy, nickel, cobalt, tungsten and aluminium. (BE8254 important questions Basic Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering)

Define statically induced emf.
The coil remains stationary with respect to flux, but the flux through it changes with time. The emf induced is known as statically induced emf.

What do you mean by step down transformer?
If the secondary voltage is greater than primary value, the transformer is called step down transformer. (BE8254 important questions Basic Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering)

What are the functions of no-load current in a transformer?
No-load current produces flux and supplies iron loss and copper loss on no-load.

What is the significance of back emf?
In motoring mode, armature induced emf is known as the back emf to stress the fact that it opposes armature emf. It plays the rule of a regulator.

Write the principle of operation of 3 phase induction motor.
Induction motor works on the principle of faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction. It consists of stator and rotor windings. As these rotor windings or bars rotate within the magnetic field created by the stator magnetizing currents, voltages are induced in them. If the rotor were to stand still, then the induced voltages would be very similar to those induced in the stator windings. (BE8254 important questions Basic Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering)

What is synchronous speed?
The speed at which the stator field rotates is called synchronous speed and it depends upon the frequency of supply and number of poles for which the stator is wound.

Sample for PH8251 important questions MATERIALS SCIENCE:

What are Nanomaterials?

Nanomaterials are the materials with atoms arranged in nano sized clusters which become the building block of the material. Any material with a size between and 100 nm[ 10–9 m to 10–7m] is called nanomaterials.

Give the principle of Shape memory Alloys

The shape memory effect occurs between two temperatures states, ie., Martensite and Austenite. The SMA in the Marteniste is attained the temporary deformed shape when cooling. But when heating the martensite state is changed into Austenite state. During deformation the resistivity, thermal conductivity, Young modulus and yield strength are decreased by more than 40%.

Define Hysteresis of a SMA?

Hysteresis of a SMA is defined as the difference between the temperatures at which the material is 50% transformed to austenite when heating and 50% transformed to martensite when cooling.

Define Cooper pair.

The electron pairs called cooper pairs are formed at low temperature by overcoming the repulsive forces. The cooper pairs moves without scattering (without any resistance) in the lattice structure. Now the material becomes super conductor. This is also called as electron-phonon- electron interaction these two electrons have equal and opposite momentum and spins.

What are the characteristics of high temperature [high TC] superconductors?

High Superconductors have high temperatures.

They have a modified perovskite crystal structure.

Superconducting state is direction dependent.

These are oxides of copper with other elements.

These are reactive, brittle, and cannot be easily modified or joined.

For high superconductors, liquid Nitrogen is used instead of liquid helium.
