ME8261 Syllabus OBJECTIVES:

To develop skill to use software to create 2D and 3D models.

ME8261 Syllabus LIST OF EXERCISES USING SOFTWARE CAPABLE OF DRAFTING AND MODELING

1. Study of capabilities of software for Drafting and Modeling – Coordinate
systems (absolute, relative, polar, etc.) – Creation of simple figures like polygon
and general multi-line figures.

2. Drawing of a Title Block with necessary text and projection symbol.

3. Drawing of curves like parabola, spiral, involute using B spline or cubic spine.

4. Drawing of front view and top view of simple solids like prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, etc, and dimensioning.

5. Drawing front view, top view and side view of objects from the given
pictorial views (eg. V-block, Base of a mixie, Simple stool, Objects with hole and curves).

6. Drawing of a plan of residential building (Two bed rooms, kitchen, hall, etc.)

7. Drawing of a simple steel truss.

8. Drawing sectional views of prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, etc,

9. Drawing isometric projection of simple objects.

10. Creation of 3-D models of simple objects and obtaining 2-D multi-view
drawings from 3-D model.

Note: Plotting of drawings must be made for each exercise and attached to the records written by students.

ME8261 Syllabus OUTCOMES:

Ability to use the software packers for drafting and modeling

Ability to create 2D and 3D models of Engineering Components

Principles of metal casting: Pattern materials, types and allowance; Study of moulding, sand moulding, tools, moulding materials, description and operation of cupola: special casting processes.

Basic operation – upsetting- flattening- drawing- swaging: tools and appliances-drop forging-press forging.Bench Work and Fitting-Fitting, sawing, chipping, thread cutting (die), tapping; Study of hand tools, Marking and marking tools.

Welding principles, classification of welding techniques; Oxyacetylene Gas welding, welding, metal arc, Carbon arc, submerged arc and atomic hydrogen welding, Electric resistance welding – composition, properties and function; Electrodes, Types of joints and edge preparation, Brazing and soldering.

PR8251 Syllabus UNIT IV SHEET METAL WORK

Common processes, tools and equipments; metals used for sheets, standard specification for sheets, spinning, bending, embossing and coining.

PR8251 Syllabus UNIT V UNCONVENTIONAL MACHINING PROCESSES

Need for unconventional – Construction, working principle merits, demerits and applications only for AJM, USM, ECM, EDM, EBM, LBM and IBM.

  • To learn and understand the principles behind the qualitative and quantitative estimation of biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, metabolites etc.,) and laboratory analysis of the same in the body fluids.

BT8261 Syllabus EXPERIMENTS

1. General guidelines for working in biochemistry lab (theory).

2. Units of volume, weight, density and concentration measurements and their range in biological measurements. Demonstration of proper use of volume and weight measurement devices.

3. Accuracy, precision, sensitivity and specificity (theory).

4. Preparation of buffer –titration of a weak acid and a weak base.

5. Qualitative tests for carbohydrates – distinguishing reducing from non-reducing sugars and keto from aldo sugars.

6. Quantitative method for amino acid estimation using ninhydrin – distinguishing amino from imino acid.

7. Protein estimation by Biuret and Lowry’s methods.

8. Protein estimation by Bradford and spectroscopic methods.

9. Extraction of lipids and analysis by TLC.

10. Estimation of nucleic acids by absorbance at 260 nm and hyperchromic effect (demo).

11. Enzymatic assay: phosphatase from potato.

12. Enzymatic assay: estimation of glucose by GOD-POD method after hydrolysis of starch with acid and specificity of the enzymatic method.

Basic principles of organic chemistry, role of carbon, types of functional groups, biomolecules, chemical nature of water, pH and biological buffers.

BT8251 Syllabus UNIT II STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF IMPORTANT BIOMOLECULES:

Carbohydrates (mono, di, oligo & polysaccharides) mutarotation, glycosidic bond, reactions of monosaccharides and reducing sugars Starch, glycogen, cellulose and chitin. BE8256 Syllabus UNIT I LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS

Basic concepts and hints; Zeroth law; First Law of Thermodynamics – Statement and application; Steady flow energy equation-problems- Second law of Thermodynamics – Kelvin – Plank statement and Clausius statement- problems; Limitations; Heat Engine, Refrigerator and Heat Pump, Available energy, Third law of Thermodynamics – Statement.

BE8256 Syllabus UNIT II HEATING AND EXPANSION OF GASES

Expressions for work done, Internal energy and heat transfer for Constant Pressure, Constant Volume, Isothermal, Adiabatic and Polytropic processes-Derivations and problems; Free expansion and Throttling process.

BE8256 Syllabus UNIT III AIR STANDARD CYCLES

Carnot cycle; Stirlings cycle; Joule cycle; Otto cycle; Diesel cycle; Dual combustion Cycle- Derivations and problems.

BE8256 Syllabus UNIT IV I.C. ENGINES, STEAM AND ITS PROPERTIES AND TEAM

Superheated steam. Use of steam tables; volume of wet steam, volume of superheated steam; External work of evaporation; Internal energy; Entropy of vapour, Expansion of vapour, Rankine cycle. Steam turbines – Impulse and Reaction types – Principles of operation.

BE8256 Syllabus UNIT V SIMPLE MECHANISM, FLY WHEEL, DRIVES AND BALNCING

Definition of Kinematic Links, Pairs and Kinematic Chains; Flywheel-Turning moment Diagram; Fluctuation of Energy. Belt and rope drives; Velocity ratio; slip; Creep; Ratio of tensions; Length of belt; Power Transmitted; gear trains-types. Balancing of rotating masses in same plane; Balancing of masses rotating in different planes.

• Students should learn thermodynamics and thermal engineering to understand the principles behind the operation of thermal equipments like IC engines and turbines etc.,

CY8292 Syllabus UNIT I UNIT PROCESSES

Nitration, Sulphonation, Halogenation, Esterification, Amination, Saponification and Hydrogenation – Role of the above unit processes in such industries as petroleum, drugs, pharmaceuticals and organic synthesis.

CY8292 Syllabus UNIT II REACTION MECHANISMS

Free radical, substitutions, electrophilic, addition, aromatic electrophilic substitutions, nucleophilic additions, condensation reactions, nucleophilic substitutions in aliphatic and aromatic compounds, cyclo-additions, rearrangements-Beckmann and Fries rearrangement reactions.

CY8292 Syllabus UNIT III OILS, FATS, SOAPS & LUBRICANTS

Chemical constitution, Chemical analysis of oils and fats – acid, saponification and iodine values, Definitions, determinations and significance. Definition, mechanism of lubrication, preparation of petrolubes, desirable characteristics – viscosity, viscosity index, carbon residue, oxidation stability, flash and fire points, cloud and pour points, aniline point. Semisolid lubricant – greases, preparation of sodium, lithium, calcium and axle greases and uses, consistency test and drop point test. Solid lubricants – graphite and molybdenum disulphide.

CY8292 Syllabus UNIT IV CHEMICALS AND AUXILIARIES

Preparation, properties and uses of bleaching powder, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide. Estimation of available chlorine in hypochlorite bleach liquor. Determination of strength of hydrogen peroxide.

CY8292 Syllabus UNIT V COLORANTS

Theory of color and constitution: chromophore and auxochrome, classification of dyes based on application. Chemistry and synthesis of azo dye (Methyl red, Methyl orange and Congo red)
